Dr. Peter Tan, Jr.

Dr. Peter Tan, Jr. is a board-certified Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeon, with a reputation for treating his coworkers and patients like family and a passion for providing the highest quality of care to all of his patients. His strong interests are in the fields of dental implants, hard & soft tissue engineering, wisdom teeth removal, trauma/reconstruction, and corrective jaw surgery. He grew up most of his life in the Maryland/DC areas. He completed his undergraduate studies at both the University of Oxford (UK) and the University of Pittsburgh, where he was recruited for Division 1 soccer. He then moved back home to pursue a Doctorate of Dental Surgery at Howard University on a military Health Professions scholarship.

Following graduation, he was commissioned as a Captain in the United States Army Dental Corps and moved to Fort Benning, Georgia, where he completed a one-year residency in Advanced Education in General Dentistry. Following that year, he attended Walter Reed National Military Medical Center for his Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery residency, where he had extensive training in anesthesia, facial trauma, reconstructive jaw surgery, TMJ, pathology, cosmetics, dental extractions and implants. His residency program included training at University of Maryland’s Shock Trauma Center, Children’s National Medical Center, and Charleston (WV) Area Medical Center. In his final year, he served as Chief Resident.
 
After residency, Dr. Tan worked as an Army surgeon for 4 years and served as teaching faculty at Walter Reed’s Tri-Service Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery residency program. In the Army, Dr. Tan treated thousands of soldiers and their families, working extensively with patients with TMJ, pathology, and jaw alignment disorders, as well as Wounded Warriors.

Dr. Tan is a Diplomate of the American Board of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, a Fellow of the American College of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons, and a Fellow of the American Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons. He is a member of the American Dental Association, Virginia Society of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons, and Mid-Atlantic Society of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons. He has hospital privileges at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center.

 Away from the office or hospital, Dr. Tan enjoys spending time with his wife Melissa, 3 sons, and friends. He has a passion for travel, food, watching and playing many sports including soccer, golf, skiing, tennis, and football.
