How to eat after wisdom teeth removal day by day guide blog

After wisdom teeth removal, your mouth needs time to heal. And what you eat during recovery can make a huge difference in how you feel and how well you recover. That is why it is so important to follow your post-operative instructions. Reviewing them ahead of time will help you stay prepared.

So what (and how) should you eat after wisdom teeth removal? Let’s talk about it.

Day 1: Choose Liquids and Soft Foods

The first 24 hours are especially important because a blood clot must form at each extraction site. This clot helps protect the area as it heals. So, for day one, we recommend limiting your diet to liquids and soft foods. A few good options include:

  • Yogurt
  • Smoothies
  • Applesauce
  • Soup (lightly warmed)
  • Juice
  • Pudding
  • Mashed foods

Any soft foods that require little chewing should work. However, avoid hot and spicy foods, carbonated beverages, and alcoholic drinks. Do not use a straw. The suction can interfere with the blood clot and increase the risk of complications.

While your mouth and lips are numb from anesthesia, take extra care when eating. The numbness can make it easier to accidentally bite your cheek, lip, or tongue.

Days 2 to 3: Continue with Soft Foods

During the second and third days, we generally advise patients to stick to liquid and soft foods. Your swelling and stiffness may actually become more noticeable during this period. Because of this, soft foods like yogurt, smoothies, soup, mashed potatoes, oatmeal, applesauce, scrambled eggs, and the like are great choices.

Avoid anything hard, crunchy, spicy, or difficult to chew. Continue to avoid things that are hot, carbonated, or alcoholic. And, of course, continue to refrain from using straws. Don’t forget to pay attention to your oral hygiene. Brush regularly, and be careful to avoid the surgical site.

Days 4 to 5: Gradually Expand Your Diet

By days 4 to 5 after your wisdom teeth removal, you are probably feeling more comfortable. You can begin to introduce additional soft foods into your diet. Still avoid foods that could lodge in the incision site or irritate healing tissue. A few ideas include tender pasta, soft vegetables, tofu, eggs, flaky fish, and other such foods that are easy to chew.

Days 6 to 7: Slowly Return to Normal Foods

As your mouth continues to heal, you can start working more of your normal foods into your diet. This is also the time you should begin using the irrigation syringe. Use it as instructed: fill the syringe with salt water and gently flush food or debris from the socket. This will help you to keep the area clean as you introduce more foods.

Remember, everyone’s recovery is different. The complexity of your extraction and your individual healing process can affect how quickly you return to your regular diet. If something hurts or requires significant chewing, consider waiting a little longer. Ready to get started?
